Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot program is developed with community involvement and aims to extend the advantages of economic immigration to smaller towns. It provides a route to obtaining permanent residency for skilled foreign workers who wish to both work and reside in one of the communities participating in the program.

Participating communities

  • Ontario: North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay
  • Manitoba: Brandon, Altona/Rhineland , MB
  • Saskatchewan: Moose Jaw
  • Alberta: Claresholm
  • British Columbia: West Kootenay (Trail, Castlegar, Rossland, Nelson), Vernon

How RNIP works?

There are 4 steps to applying for permanent residence under this pilot.

  • Step 1: Check that you meet both
    (i) IRCC eligibility requirements and
    (ii) community - specific requirements.
  • Step 2: Find an eligible job with an employer in one of the participating communities.
  • Step 3: Once you have a job offer, submit your application for recommendation to the community.
  • Step 4: Apply for permanent residence.

IRCC Eligibility

Qualifying work experience or international studies

  • You need 1 year of work experience (at least 1,560 hours) in the past 3 years. OR
  • You must have completed a minimum of a 2 year full - time post - secon dary educational credential OR
  • A Master’s Degree or higher level of education at an institution in one of the participating communities.

English / French Language Requirements

The English or French language requirement depends on the TEER category of thecandidate’s qualifyingwork experience:

  • TEER 0 or 1: Canadian Language Benchmark of
    Level 6 (CLB6)
  • TEER 2 or 3: CLB 5
  • TEER 4 or 5: CLB 4

Education Requirements

  • All candidates must have completed a minimum level of education equivalent to a Canadian high school diploma. Candidates who completed studies outside of Canada must submit an Educational Credentials Assessment (ECA)

Settlement funds

  • When applying for immigration to Canada, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and your dependents during the settling - in period, unless you are already employed in Canada legally.
