Canada’s Express Entry System is the primary pathway for skilled workers who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), it uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate candidates based on age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and other factors.
How the Draws Work
Every few weeks, IRCC conducts Express Entry draws, also known as Rounds of Invitations. In each draw:
- A minimum CRS score is announced.
- Candidates with scores equal to or higher than the cut-off are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
- If multiple candidates have the same score, a tie-breaker rule applies, favoring those who submitted their profile earlier.
This process ensures transparency and fairness while allowing Canada to meet its immigration targets.
Types of Draws
General Draws
Open to candidates from all three federal programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades). Typically have higher CRS cut-offs since competition is broad.
Program-Specific Draws
Target candidates from a particular program, such as those with a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination. PNP candidates receive 600 extra CRS points, which almost guarantees an ITA.
Category-Based Draws
Introduced in 2023, these draws invite candidates with specific skills or attributes in demand. Current categories include:
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professions
- Skilled trades
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
- French-language proficiency
These draws often have lower CRS requirements, creating more opportunities for qualified candidates.
